This channel looks at budget audio and video gear from the perspective of someone who just wants to make videos at home. So there's a bit of tech and a bit of fun .......
Vlog -Gotta Get Back for a Bacon Sarni..... Action 2 Revisited
The Action 2 originally attracted me because of its diminutive size. When I first tried it, I was underwhelmed with my footage and felt that it just didn't look that great. Following that, I virtually never used it.
Recently, I've been wanting to take video without drawing too much attention to myself, so I decided to just give it another go.
I've used the Action 4 which is a brilliant little camera, since it came out and never understood why I felt so bad about the Action 2.
So this is a quick little video about nothing in particular, using just the Action 2 and its internal mic, wandering around to see what I get.
Just one thing, Don't use an ND filter while walking!!! The shutter is too slow and you get poor stabilisation as I found at the start of this video. I was just too lazy to take it off!!!!

DJI Wireless Mic 2 Straight into the Action 4, No Receiver Needed - It's a No Brainer!!

This mic is absolutely brilliant with the Osmo Action 4. No receiver needed. Just the transmitter and frankly, if you have an Action, the mic is a no brainer. Very small amount of EQ in post and you get excelllent sounding audio ...... from a little action camera!! In this video, rather than just do a formal review, I just used it in different locations. The audio was just normalised and not ed...

Torre Abbey & Gardens - Places Around Torquay to Visit
Переглядів 1772 місяці тому
Torre Abbey and its gardens is a great place to visit in Torquay. Not far from the beach and contains many historical paintings, The Abbey was ruined by Henry VIII in his bid to get rid of the Catholic religion in the UK and then it was further blown up in the 18th century in order to make the place safe. Now there is the ruin, the house which is amazing and the gardens, so plenty to see. This ...
Zoom H1 Essential - A Real Budget 32 Bit Recorder. What Does it Sound Like?
Переглядів 3,7 тис.3 місяці тому
At first, I wasn't sold on the Zoom H1E because I felt that it was a bit noisy. Probably, because, me being me, went to an extreme and raised the gain in post from a tiny signal far too much. 32 bit isn't the 'be all and end all' thing to use, but actually, since my first reaction, my feelings towards this budget recorder have really changed. In real usage, noise doesn't seem to be that much of...
Using the Insta360 Ace Pro in Typical UK Light........... (Really Dull and Grey)
Переглядів 2643 місяці тому
I have grown to really like the Ace Pro. It seems to produce good footage, whatever I take. For this chat, I used The Ace Pro (of Course), the Insta360 multi purpose selfie stick, The Insta360 Audio Adapter, the Insta Quick mount and an Edutige mic plugged straight into the camera. I think unless they do something special, GoPro may be in trouble what with the Insta360 lineup and the DJI camera...
Smallrig RC60B Portable Lighting

This is an amazingly powerful light for its size. You can literally hold it in the palm of your hand and it does come with a handle for carrying and using on the fly. There are accessories for it like the hood that is supplied with it but curiously, no charger. Looking at it, you would presume a normal kind of USB charger would work, but you wait forever. You need something way more powerful. I...

Diffusion Filters - Glimmerglass and Black Pro-Mist Filters Compared
Переглядів 4525 місяців тому
Diffusion filters can really help to soften the overall image and just help in contrasty situations. In fact, I often use a Tiffen Black Pro-Mist 1/2 strength on my videos so that they look less digital. That's because we often watch our videos on a large screen and need it to look nice and smooth in order to look more natural. Modern lenses are extremely sharp and can just look digital and har...
Comica VM30 - Is this the first of a kind? A Wireless Shotgun mic!!

I wasn't expecting this mic to be that great, but actually, over time, it grew on me because of one thing .... it's convenience of use. Whether you use it on camera, boomed or handheld, you can choose to use it wired or wireless. It works over a fairly long distance, but if you turn your back on the camera, the receiver does get blocked. The old Rode wireless did the same. It has to be the freq...
Chiddingstone & the Search for the 'Chiding Stone'

The Chiding Stone is an extremely old stone, form 135 million years ago. (How do they know that?) It is what they called it, a device for 'chiding' ..... scolding and flogging 'wrongdoers'. It has also been used as a Druid altar. This is a very old village and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Winston Churchill's Chartwell Gardens Using a Neckmount and Remote Control

This was an experiment using a Telesin neck mount. I used 24fps so any jitter was going to show easily and I found some really useful things about it. First, still shots are dead still! I just stood there and pressed the remote control. Dead easy and very still shots. (I used Horizon Balance on the Action 4) Second, pan shots are brilliant. Just very slowly turn your body and you get a pan shot...

Osmo Action 4 at Dusk
Переглядів 5598 місяців тому
The Osmo Action 4 works well in low light for an action cam. I set the ISO to 100 - 200 and used it going into dusk, just to see how it would look. So to gain a little light, I shot in 24fps and used a very slow shutter. When it got quite dark at the end, I was on a 100 degree shutter .... 1/24th second. The video looks brighter than it did in real life at that point. Still at ISO 200!! So you ...

OK Dave, Let's Make a VLOG ....... one day!!!
My camera looks different, it is a sony HDR
They all start with HDR-CX (and then a number)
Is this the CX625 or CX450?
Action 2
Does the Sony CX625 have Cinematone? And is it applied to 25P or only for 24p models? Thnx
Yes, it has cinematone which can be applied in all frame rates.
@@iancraig thnx. Because I bought a PJ410 camera assuming it was the exact same menu since the manual lists the CX series on it, and sure enough, it doesn’t have Cinematone. I find it odd, but maybe it’s exclusive for the CX models. I went through one of your menu navigations from the Cinematone video and trust me the PJ menu doesn’t have all the features! I Mainly bought it for XAVC-S.
Word of warning when using these outside in sunlight, which you will, that's the reason for using it! If you hold the camera pointing to the ground with the loupe lens pointing up, you'll concentrate the sun on a single spot on your screen and will burn it, with a permanent yellow mark. Once you've stood like that for several minutes you'll have a family of yellow marks all over the screen. The loupe lens is a magnifying glass. I damaged two cameras before I realised. I have that same loupe under the Calumet brand, it has a rubber cover for the lens, now I know why...
I never thought of that. Thanks.

He is no respecter of persons! because God wants us all to be saved! and let's go to the knowledge of the “Truth” God wants to save us from eternal damnation, which we all deserve because of sin, who entered the world through Adam, and death entered through sin, and thus death passed to all human beings, Therefore, we are all “Sinners” But God's Love was so great for us, that he sent his only Son (Jesus Christ), gave him to this world, to die and rise for all of us! All of us who trust in Him; we have “Eternal Life! “ And we must know that there is salvation in no one else; because there is no other name under heaven, given to human beings, in which we can be saved. Therefore, we must be doers of the Word of God! and not only listeners and/or readers, deceiving ourselves. So let's read the Word of God! There is His Will! what God wants us to do! I need the lavalier mic too. So I'm lookin at the Rode SmartLav+. Did you used this mic?
Yes. I have that one too. I prefer the Little Clippy though. It has much lower self noise and is richer sounding. Another I like is the newer Rode lavalier. It’s the ‘flat’ one. Again, very robust sound. These days though, I do tend to EQ the sound more often than not so for me, the self noise is the biggest problem with them in quiet environments.
@@iancraig It doesn't sell in our country. So you are an elect I can't find it on Amazon or Ebay I like how it sound though I'm gonna use it with my laptop for recordin videos with a standart camera with the standard settings of Win11

They still make the CX405. I bought one new a few weeks ago. Fedex destroyed it in shipping so I have to wait for a replacement to arrive. Grr!
It’s been going for quite a long time now. Such a good buy really. It would be nice if the stuck 4K in an updated version though.
@@iancraig I don't know. 4K seems an awful waste of resources. 1080p is pretty close to 2K and the cinemas use 2K and 4K
I use 4K on my TV though and footage does look sharp on it when it is truly 4K rather than upscaled.
@@iancraigI suspect there's a fault with the TV in that case.
Does it have a remote start ?
No, not one that I remember. Mine has long gone now.
Oooo What you end up with
I have quite a lot of cameras but for quick takes with good sound, I use an ax53 with a mic plugged in or I record separately on a Zoom h6 n. For other stuff I use either a Canon or Sony mirrorless camera with an f1.4 lens which is amazing for low light.
Thank you very much. The video helped me a lot. I loved it, I liked the camera, and I also liked that you put the translation in Arabic.💗💗💗
I’m glad that it was useful. It’s quite an old video now.
Lovely video Mr Craig!
Thank you Mr Emm.
Beautiful couple, may you live long!
I’ll drink to that! I’ve got to 70 so far ….. touch wood!
Hi Ian hope you're well. Enjoyed my virtual walk around your village seeing all the sights and sounds. I thought the picture was very good along with the audio maybe the colours were a bit flat but OK for a vlog or two. Enjoyed the John Wayne impression, I have a hat nearly identical to yours. Best wishes stay safe Jon
Hi Jon. I shot it in D-cinelike which is quite flat. I often find the normal profile a bit contrasty. It’s a really tiny thing to be videoing on tbh. My old hat is so knackered that it makes me look a bit vagrant like so I changed it for a leather one. Still too new looking but I’ll soon get it battered in.

I'm so close to ditching the GoPro ecosystem and moving to DJI. Sick of the GoPro limitations and needing so many accessories just to get a decent external mic plugged in. Great video!
The Hero 9 did it for me. Freezing, switching off while recording, locking up. I became so sick of it. Never had a freeze or lock up on any Action and I have all 4!
@@iancraig that’s pretty good! I’ve maybe had a couple GoPro crashes but I don’t use it that often. I’m just pricing up a DJI mic 2 for GoPro but for the TX and RX plus GoPro media mod it would set me back around £250 😤 I could probably sell my GoPro 11 and then buy the Action 4 and a single DJI mic 2
If you get the Action 4, then the DJI Mic 2 is just superb with it. Set input volume around +6 on the Action and it sounds great and has a really healthy volume too. The Action 4 and Ace Pro are my favourite Action cams. Gopro doesn't come into it for me.
@@iancraig great stuff thanks so much. I think my decision has been made 😄
It’s vastly different from Australia. Looking at the pond my first thoughts were of snakes and mosquitoes, then I realised they wouldn’t exist there. This is the best review I’ve seen. Thank you. I just bought a used one on EBay rather than a cheap new one & it seems I’ve landed a beauty. They’re still available new for $AUD500+ . On a tripod it should fine for filming football for the local club. Thanks again!
Great for football with the huge zoom on it. Yes, in the UK, the only thing we fear the most is the neighbour. A very ferocious breed.
@@iancraig Good fences make good neighbours. We’ve been very lucky.
i have the Zoom Q2n and the picture always looks a little bit grainy?
I guess small sensor doesn’t help. Also, you can’t fix the iso so that it stays low. The lack of manual overrides makes it difficult to get good quality on these cameras other than in really good light.
@@iancraig cheers for info,.. im looking for a good phone camera or camcorder with great picture and sound,.. i thought with the zoom products the sound would be great,... but not impressed with the grainy picture,.. i would imagine its the same for the zoom q8n-4k video camera,..
Yes. Q8 is the very same. I loved the form factor and sound, but hated the picture quality when light was less than ideal. Mine’s long gone. All they needed to do was get it to work in manual mode, so that we could get iso under control. Trouble is that in low light, the iso is possible going up too quickly rather than shutter. I’m not sure, but low light is really poor which is quite funny for a camera designed for musicians who often work in low light environments. Also the fov was too wide for my tastes.
Very useful review, based on personal practical experience. Enough information for me to make my purchase decision. Thank's a lot!
Hi Ian, have enjoyed your vids on the CX405 and other topics. I've been using a CX405 for a few years now and completely agree with you about its ease of use and its secret power (optical zoom). My two tips are to put a couple of little stick-on lavalier furry windshields on each of the mics. The wind noise without them makes the audio almost unusable, with anything more than the most gentle of breezes. With the little lavalier windshields the audio is magnitudes better! Other thing I do is to use a small powerbank with a usb extension cable. I velcro it to my tripod or just leave it in my pocket. That little village btw is just so quintessential England! Where is it? Surrey/Kent maybe?
Hi. Yes, great ideas. I’m in a village called Crockham Hill, which is right on the border between Kent and Surrey. On the path where those old Canterbury monks walked and apparently, stopped in our pub which was then an inn. I’m surrounded by farms which is fantastic, but there isn’t a single shop here, so if we get snow, it’s freezer time!
@@iancraig ah ha, my wife's parents were in Smallfieid. I'm a Kiwi in NZ, but for some reason figured it was close by. Lovely part of the world. :) Do try the furry windshields, they really work well for this camera.
Actually, I use do use fluffies on them normally if it's windy! I love it here except for no shops. Smallfield isn’t far from me.
If I use the Action 4 camera to change all settings on a Mic 2 transmitter (32 bit float, low cut filter, etc), do those settings stay that way on the transmitter, even if I later use the transmitter on it's own without the Action 4? I'm trying to decide whether I can buy just the transmitters without the receiver, and use my Action 4 to basically get full functionality out of the transmitters, apply settings I want, and then later use the transmitters as standalone onboard recording. Thanks!
The low cut and 32 bit recording switches are on the camera and those settings stay with the transmitter once set. The recordings are then 32 bit on the transmitter when you offload them.
@@iancraig sounds like this is a great way for me to skip the need for a receiver! thanks so much for the response, cheers.
Audio quality on the Action 4 with it is really good as well. Best way I think, for audio on the Action.
How good is it for outdoor/ ambience etc⁉️
I often use it for ambience. It works well. You have one though, don’t you?
@@iancraig Yeah bro ,I got one in 2017 used it for small parties etc. Now I m into ( starting into) field recordings, specialy specialy ambience, hence the qn. Thanks again.
Which one would you recommend? Action 3 or 4 for street walking vloggin?
Action 4 is significantly better. Mind you, I have been getting terrific results from the Ace Pro recently!
@@iancraig Yeah, I saw Ace Pro is killing it in low-light conditions. DJI and Go-Pro are far behind it, but I plan to do daytime shootings. thank you for the advice.
Thank you for your review and tips on settings. Just got one.
Hope it helped.
My God, you’re obsessed with the dead cat
I love fluffy things. I might buy some more now you’ve mentioned it.
@@iancraig maybe you need something that’s a bit warmer than than a microphone.
I might go blimp with a fluffy around it I think.
MI piace più l'avantone, anche se la differenza è minima e nessuno se ne accorgerà mai dall'altra parte dello schermo 😁
SÌ. Anch'io preferisco l'Avantone. Sembra che il suono sia più fluido con la mia voce.
I bought a matched pair of these...the mics are OK. But I find them quite noisy!
Oh. That’s weird, I didn’t find mine to be too bad. Not preamp noise is it?
I enjoyed the commentary ... that's the Chiding Stone....no, that's not the Chiding Stone, its a spare!
I just ramble on about nothing in particular………
Could this mic be used to record exhaust sound on my motorcycle using double dead cat ?
I'm not sure what you mean by 'double deadcat' or why, but mics will record whatever you put in front of them fine. Do you mean one deadcat put on top of the other? What for? The only thing with a lavalier for exhaust sound is whether the sound reaches the timit of the mics max input. Lav mics tend to be lower than others.
Which camcorder has the best audio? Thinking of getting one to do band/gig videos. Don't want to buy a lot of outboard stuff, so looking for an all-in-one with good audio. Good video. Thanks.
Actually, all Sonys tend to have nice audio. For band/gig audio, you’re going to need less sensitive mics because the sheer volume can’t be tamed easily by sensitive mics and you end up with distortion. Noise from camera preamps won’t be a problem. So choose a stereo mic with attenuation. You will most likely need to turn the camera input gain to its lowest setting. I use a Sennheiser mke440 but a cheaper option might be the Rode stereo mic. Both sound good. Be careful with the cheaper camcorders … no mic input or a mic input with no coldshoe. I use a more expensive ax53 which is superb for show recording. Portable and quick to use. For more serious stuff though, I use a mirrorless with a very open lens F1.4 for low light. Be careful of massive changes of stage lighting. It can dramatically change very quickly and ruin your footage!
What's your windscreen? I have a pair of the C2 but I have a cheap not so effective windscreen
It was 5 years ago now, but I think it was a Movo ballistic nylon windshield. A bit big to look at on this mic, but just one I had handy at the time.
Thank You is there a particular White/ gray standard to do the custom white balance?
There is. You can buy a white or grey card online to hold in front of the lens to get true white or grey from Amazon.
Thank you for the review 🙏 I will get this one.
It’s a nice mic.
good test
Thanks
Спасибо! Качественный обзор микрофона. Думаю купить себе B-5.
Great video…makes everything easy to understand. If I have a CX440 and shooting mostly clouds and storm formations from an outdoor tripod, how would you do the settings? I have noticed sometimes the clouds get blown out so I did the one-touch white balance as you suggested. As for the rest, I have no clue.
Thank you Calabamian. The clouds are like to be blown out if you include land or trees in the shot. The reason being that the camera ‘sees’ a dark area and so boosts the exposure. There are two things you could try. A) lower the exposure compensation by a stop or so. Personally, if I wanted cloud detail, I would expose purely for the sky. B) a more technical way is to use a semi nd filter or what is called a graduated nd filter. Top half is nd, bottom half is clear. If there is no thread on the lens, then you could hold it in place which is also nice because you can adjust up and down for where you want the nd effect to start. This method gives correctly exposed land as well as sky! Basically, the clouds get blown out due to the dynamic range being too wide for the sensor.
Mate, do a video on “how to see the northern lights on your CX-440” and you’ll have a million downloads today.
Do you still have this microphone? If so, how is it holding up?
Yes, I still have it. No different now to when I got it. I still quite like it and I think prefer it to the ‘green’ one!
Sir, Can you explain why my streaming vidio quality is very poor when using Sony CX 405 camera. What will be the reasons... Connect to OBS via normal vidio capture..
I’m sorry, I have never streamed with it. Someone might come in and help though.
Thanks. I learned something new. Not the usual UA-cam rehash. My question still is if there is much of a difference of quality from the H6e that may have better preamps?
Yes, maybe the preamps might be better on the H6e. My h6n sounds very clean but I think the mics on it are probably better as well. With the H1e, as long as you record at reasonable proximity, I don’t think the noise is too bad. 32bit certainly doesn’t save you from noise though if the signal is quiet. The noise floor comes right up with it.
@@iancraig I still can't decide whether to get the H1e or the H6e. I like the portability of the smaller one. Don't think I would use it to mount on camera to run through worse camera preamps. But would use it for drone footage ambient sound. So if not mounting, maybe bigger would not matter if it has better mics and preamps.
Mine has no hyper cardio but hypo cardio, first time I see this directivity
Still available as of 4/25/2024 via Amazon. My only complaint is its dedicated right hand use. I know southpaws are only 10% population but I would be willing to pay more for it. Otherwise, this camera does a fine job. It creates crisp video despite its lower resolution.
Ok so what do you recommend...Audio quality is very important...
I’m not recommending anything. Just reporting what I saw! The audio on this is fantastic.
Hi Craig. How can I remove the menus from the screen to broadcast live or record? that is, so that the screen can be seen clean. I have a Sony cx405
I don’t live-stream, but normally the menu isn’t there when you are videoing. The shortcuts are though. I don’t think you can get rid of them.
Good concept. Great execution. Strong Review. Disney Sponsored. LOLS. Thank you.
Thank you. (I think)
@@iancraig LOLS. I really enjoyed the video. I have a Shure SM58 and am considering a Rode Reporter. I liked the different setups and really life tests. Here in America they say . . . "You only kid the people you like." It is widely true. Serious. Nice Job.
Well, I’m glad it was useful. Quite an old video now. That Rode Reporter looks like a really nice mic. Fancy one myself. We’re going over to USA in the Summer for three weeks. Can’t wait for the brighter, prettier light than the grey stuff we get in the UK. Might actually get video in colour!!
I have found recording via the camera is ok if a bit muddy, but as a stand alone recorder it comes out very quiet, even at high gain (+6) could i have a faulty one ?
I had similar so I turned up the gain on the camera to +12 and the gain was better. It is weird in that the transmitter seems to remember what gain it was remotely set at and uses this to record. The DJI original wireless is the same. Try full gain.
ce microphone n'a pas vocation à avoir pour usage principal la voix humaine. Ce serait mieux de le tester sur d'autres sources sonores...
Each to his/her own. Chacun pour soi.
Do you have also the receiver? Have you compared the quality of the sound when transmitting via bluetooth with the native connection via the receiver? How much do we lose by switching to bluetooth?
No. I only have the transmitter. I already have the original DJI Wireless and didn’t want another full set. Just something to stop having to use a receiver with the Action. The quality of the audio has really surprised me. Didn’t expect it to be anything like as good as it is. There is (I think) some kind of matching going on because the transmitter is nowhere near as good going into the Ace Pro. For some reason, the Action sounds really good with it.
Sennheiser MKH 416 forever!
Sounds amazing! What do you think would be the best stereo microphone for recording outside? I record video while running and would like a good mic I can put a blip on or big dead cat, when you are running there can be lots of wind that can ruin the video. I thought that I could record separately then combine the audio with the video. I want to be able to get all the ambiance of the run.
Thanks John. I use two stereo mics. One is the Rode Stereomic which sits quite upright. The other is the Sennheiser mke440. Both are pretty good. I have them in deadcats. For running, another option might be the two lavs wired in stereo from MicBooster.com. They are here: micbooster.com/clippy-and-pluggy-microphones/98-2323-clippy-stereo-em272-microphone.html#/84-plug_type-right_angle/202-microphone-em272m. Not cheap but you could clip one to each side of your body to give left and right sound. It would sound more spaced out than the Sennheiser or Rode because they are omni and not forward directional, but they do capture great ambience. The Clippy lavaliers are quite large but very low noise. You could pin one to each side of your head which will give almost a binaural sound….
@@iancraig excellent information thank you sir
